Denotation：明示的意味

Denotation is word's meaning from dictionary.

明示的意味とは、いわゆる辞書に書かれている意味です。

For example, denotation of garden is a piece of land next to or around your house where you can grow flowers, fruit, vegetables, etc. (from Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

例えば、庭という言葉の明示的意味は、花や果物、野菜などを育てることができる家の周りの土地のことを指します。

Connotation：言外の意味

Connotation is the feeling or thought you associate with a word.

言外の意味とはある言葉から連想される感情や考えのことです。

For example, I can associate my father with garden because my father likes that. This is connotation.

例えば、私の父は庭いじりが好きでしたので、庭といえば父と結びつけて考えることができます。これが言外の意味です。
